What Manglik dosha means
Manglik, also called Mangal dosha, is the traditional name for Mars sitting in certain houses of a birth chart. It is one of the oldest checks in kundli matching.
Mars is the planet of drive and energy, and the tradition looks at where that energy falls in relation to married life.
How it is checked
Count the house Mars occupies from three reference points: the Lagna (your rising sign), the Moon and Venus. Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from a reference point makes the chart Manglik from that point.
Some South Indian traditions also count the 2nd house. We follow the more common five-house rule. The Lagna carries the most weight, then the Moon, then Venus.
Common cancellations
Classical texts list several placements that cancel or reduce a Manglik placement. We apply all of these:
- Mars in Aquarius or Leo, in any house.
- Mars in the same sign as Jupiter or the Moon.
- Venus or Jupiter in the Lagna.
- Mars in its own or exalted sign (Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn). The texts say this greatly reduces it; we count it as cancelled.
- House by house: Leo in the 1st, Aries or Scorpio in the 4th, Capricorn in the 7th, Sagittarius or Pisces in the 8th, Taurus or Libra in the 12th.
Why one chart is not the full story
For marriage, the tradition never judges Mars in one chart alone. A Manglik placement can be balanced by the partner’s chart, which is why a Manglik label on its own says little about a match.
Our free match check reads both charts together: all 36 gunas, Manglik for both of you with the cancellations and the balance between your charts, and a KundliScore out of 100.
Manglik questions
What is Manglik dosha?
It is the traditional name for Mars sitting in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna, the Moon or Venus in a birth chart. It is also called Mangal dosha.
How do I know if I am Manglik?
Enter your date, time and place of birth above. We work out your chart, count the house Mars sits in from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus, and check every classical cancellation.
Can Manglik dosha be cancelled?
Yes. Classical rules cancel it for several placements, such as Mars in Aquarius or Leo, or Venus or Jupiter in the Lagna. Mars in its own or exalted sign greatly reduces it, and we count that as cancelled too. The calculator shows which rule applies to you.
Does a Manglik need a Manglik partner?
Not necessarily. When both partners are Manglik from the same reference point it balances out, but so does a partner with Mars, Saturn, the Sun, or Rahu or Ketu when malefic, in the same house from the same reference point. Our match check looks at all of these.
Is the 2nd house counted?
Some South Indian traditions count it. We follow the more common rule of the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Yes. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so the time on the birth certificate matters most for the check from the Lagna.
Do you save my birth details?
No. The calculator works out your chart, shows the result and keeps nothing. Your details are not saved and are never sent to analytics or ad platforms.
