What the Upapada Lagna is
In Jaimini astrology, the Upapada Lagna, or UL, is the arudha of your 12th house: the outward image that house casts. Where the 7th house and the Darakaraka describe the partner, the Upapada traditionally describes the marriage itself.
That means the home you build together, how the bond feels from day to day, and how others see the two of you. It is counted from your rising sign, so it differs from chart to chart, and it is read the same way for everyone.
How it is worked out
Start from your 12th house, the sign just before your rising sign. Find the planet that rules that sign, and count from the 12th house to the sign where that lord sits, counting the 12th as 1. Every count goes forward through the signs, in zodiac order (Aries, Taurus, Gemini and on). Then count the same number again, starting from the lord’s sign.
One rule from the tradition: the Upapada does not sit in the 12th house itself, or in the 7th from it, the sign opposite. When the count lands on either, take the 10th sign from where it landed instead. The calculator shows each of these steps for your own chart.
Each sign has one lord here: Mars rules Scorpio and Saturn rules Aquarius. Some astrologers also weigh Ketu and Rahu for those two signs; we keep to the single lords.
What it can tell you, and what it cannot
Traditionally, the Upapada’s sign describes the feel of married life: a lively home or a quiet one, a private bond or a sociable one, and what holds the two of you together. It is one layer of the chart, not the whole picture.
It does not describe your partner’s nature; that is the work of the Darakaraka and the 7th house. It does not show timing either; that comes from your dasha periods and the movement of Jupiter and Saturn.
Upapada Lagna questions
What is Upapada Lagna in astrology?
In Jaimini astrology, the Upapada Lagna is the arudha, or outward image, of the 12th house. Traditionally, it describes the marriage itself: the home you share, the feel of the bond and how others see the two of you.
How do I calculate my Upapada Lagna?
Count from your 12th house to the sign where its lord sits, counting the 12th as 1. Then count the same number again from the lord’s sign. Enter your date, time and place of birth above and we do the count for you, showing each step.
What if the count lands on the 12th house or the sign opposite it?
The tradition does not let the Upapada sit in the 12th house itself, or in the 7th from it. When the count lands on either, take the 10th sign from where it landed. Your result says when this rule applies to your chart.
Which lords do you use for Scorpio and Aquarius?
One lord per sign: Mars for Scorpio and Saturn for Aquarius. Some astrologers also weigh Ketu and Rahu for those signs; we keep to the single lords.
Do I need my exact birth time?
As close as you can. Your rising sign changes about every two hours, and the Upapada is counted from it, so a different time can move the 12th house and change the result.
Why don’t you ask whose chart it is?
The Upapada is counted and read the same way for a man’s chart and a woman’s, so we only need the birth details.
Is the Upapada the same as the Darakaraka?
No. The Darakaraka is a planet that describes your partner’s nature. The Upapada is a sign that describes the marriage itself. The tradition reads them together.
Do you save my birth details?
No. The calculator works out your chart, shows the result and keeps nothing. Your details are not saved and are never sent to analytics or ad platforms.
