What is my purpose?

Why am I here, and what should I do with my life? Your birth chart answers in three places: Ketu shows what your past life left you, your Atmakaraka (the soul planet) shows the lesson life keeps setting, and Rahu shows where you are meant to grow.

What is Atmakaraka?

In Jaimini astrology, the Atmakaraka is the planet of the soul. "Atma" means soul, and "karaka" means the one who signifies it. It is the king of your chart: the planet whose themes your life keeps returning to.

Traditionally it shows what your soul most wants and the lesson it came to learn. The lesson tends to show up again and again, in different clothes, until it is learned.

How to find your Atmakaraka

Take the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, and read how far each has travelled through its sign. The one with the highest degree within its sign is the Atmakaraka. The one with the lowest is the Darakaraka, the planet of your spouse.

Some astrologers add Rahu to make eight karakas. We follow the seven-planet scheme, which leaves out Rahu and Ketu. The calculator above does the ranking for you and shows all seven.

Atmakaraka planets and their meaning

Sun as Atmakaraka

With the Sun as Atmakaraka, your soul wants to stand for something and be seen standing for it. Self-respect matters more to you than comfort, and you feel most alive when people rely on your judgement.

Moon as Atmakaraka

A Moon Atmakaraka wants to feel emotionally safe and to make others feel the same. You read moods quickly and often become the one everyone calls when things go wrong at home or among friends.

Mars as Atmakaraka

Mars as Atmakaraka gives a soul that wants to act and protect. You are happiest with a clear goal and something solid to build, whether that is a business or your own fitness.

Mercury as Atmakaraka

A Mercury Atmakaraka wants to understand things and explain them well. Your mind is quick, you enjoy words and numbers, and you often feel restless when there is nothing new to learn.

Jupiter as Atmakaraka

With Jupiter as Atmakaraka, your soul wants to grow wise and pass that wisdom on. People tend to come to you for advice, and you feel useful when you can guide a student or a younger cousin.

Venus as Atmakaraka

A Venus Atmakaraka wants love and beauty in daily life. You notice how a room looks or how a meal is served, and you feel unsettled when a relationship around you turns sour.

Saturn as Atmakaraka

With Saturn as Atmakaraka, your soul wants to do its duty well and be someone others can depend on. You may have grown up early and taken on family responsibility before your friends did.

Rahu and Ketu: your past life and your purpose

Rahu and Ketu, the two nodes of the Moon, always sit opposite each other. Ketu marks what you mastered before this life: skills that come easily, and a comfort zone that can hold you back. Rahu marks the unfamiliar ground this life pulls you towards.

Read together with the Atmakaraka, they answer the question most people bring to a chart: what am I here to do? Ketu is what to loosen your grip on, the Atmakaraka is the lesson, and Rahu is where the lesson takes you.

What it can tell you, and what it cannot

The Atmakaraka and the nodes describe themes and tendencies. They do not decide your career, fix your future or say who you were in a past life. Many astrologers read them alongside the Lagna, the 10th house and the running dasha.

Atmakaraka questions

What is Atmakaraka in astrology?

In Jaimini astrology, the Atmakaraka is the planet with the highest degree within its sign among the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn. It is called the soul planet, and it shows what your soul wants and the lesson it keeps meeting.

How do I find my Atmakaraka?

Enter your date, time and place of birth above. We work out your chart and rank the seven planets by degree within the sign. The highest is your Atmakaraka, and the table shows all seven.

Can Rahu be the Atmakaraka?

In the eight-karaka scheme, yes. We use the seven-planet scheme, from the Sun to Saturn, so Rahu is never the Atmakaraka here. Rahu still appears in your reading, as the direction you are meant to grow in.

Which Atmakaraka is the best?

No planet is better than another here. Each sets a different lesson and brings its own strengths: a Saturn Atmakaraka asks for patience, and a Venus Atmakaraka asks for honesty in love.

Does Ketu show who I was in my past life?

It does not name who you were. Traditionally, Ketu shows what you mastered before: the skills and habits that come easily now. Its house shows where that comfort zone sits, and where holding on too tightly can keep you stuck.

Do I need my exact birth time?

As close as you can. The houses change about every two hours, and when two planets are close in degree, a few hours can change which one is the Atmakaraka.

Do you save my birth details?

No. The calculator works out your chart, shows the result and keeps nothing. Your details are not saved and are never sent to analytics or ad platforms.
