Nadi dosha and its cancellation

Nadi dosha is present when both partners’ birth stars fall in the same Nadi. It is cancelled when you share a birth star in different padas (except the Pada Vedha pairs), or, with different birth stars, when your Moons share a sign or a sign lord.

What Nadi dosha is

Nadi (the pulse or constitution) is the last and heaviest of the eight kootas in guna milan. Each of the 27 nakshatras (birth stars) belongs to one of three Nadis: Adi (the first), Madhya (the middle) and Antya (the last). Your Nadi comes from the nakshatra your Moon was in at birth.

When the two Nadis differ, the couple gets the full 8 points. When they are the same, Nadi scores 0, and that 0 is called Nadi dosha. Traditionally Nadi is linked with the balance of the two constitutions and with family life.

The three Nadis and their nakshatras

Nine nakshatras in each Nadi.
NadiNakshatras

MadhyaBharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta, Uttara Bhadrapada
AntyaKrittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati

Because each Nadi holds nine of the 27 nakshatras, a couple shares a Nadi fairly often. That is one reason the cancellation rules matter so much.

To find your own Nadi you need your Moon nakshatra, which comes from your date, time and place of birth. The Moon spends about a day in each nakshatra, so a birth near the changeover from one star to the next is where an accurate birth time matters most.

Why Nadi weighs 8 points

The eight kootas are weighted from 1 point for Varna up to 8 for Nadi, so Nadi carries the most of any single koota. A Nadi dosha alone takes a couple from 36 down to 28 at best. The tradition gives Nadi this weight because it treats the match of constitutions as basic to family life.

For a person whose Moon sign has the Brahmin temperament, Nadi is also the priority koota. If it scores 0 and is not cancelled, the overall verdict cannot be the top one, however high the total.

Nadi dosha cancellation in the same nakshatra

If both of you have the Moon in the same nakshatra, you share a Nadi. Each nakshatra has four padas (quarters). The dosha is cancelled when your padas differ, with one important exception.

Pada Vedha (the piercing quarters) pairs pada 1 with pada 4, and pada 2 with pada 3. If your padas form one of these pairs, the dosha stays, even when the nakshatra crosses into a second Moon sign. If you share the same pada, the dosha also stays.

Nadi dosha cancellation with different nakshatras

When your nakshatras differ but fall in the same Nadi, the dosha is cancelled if either of these holds:

  • Both Moons are in the same sign. For example, Ardra and Punarvasu are both Adi, and a Moon in each can share Gemini.
  • The two Moon signs have the same lord. For example, a Moon in Rohini (Taurus) and one in Swati (Libra) are both Antya, and Venus rules both signs.

Planetary friendship between the two Moon-sign lords does not cancel Nadi on KundliScore. Friendly lords do cancel Bhakoot, which is a different koota with its own rules. Our Bhakoot dosha guide covers that.

Nadi dosha examples

A few couples, worked through the rules above:

  • Both Moons in Rohini, in padas 1 and 3. Same nakshatra, different padas, and not a Pada Vedha pair, so the dosha is cancelled.
  • Both Moons in Rohini, in padas 2 and 3. This is a Pada Vedha pair, so the dosha stays.
  • One Moon in Krittika pada 1 (Aries) and one in Krittika pada 4 (Taurus). The Moon signs differ, but padas 1 and 4 are a Pada Vedha pair, so the dosha stays.
  • One Moon in Ashwini (Aries) and one in Mula (Sagittarius). Both are Adi. The signs differ and so do their lords, Mars and Jupiter, so the dosha stays. Mars and Jupiter are friends, which cancels this couple’s Bhakoot dosha, but it does not cancel Nadi.
  • One Moon in Krittika pada 2 (Taurus) and one in Rohini (Taurus). Both are Antya, and both Moons are in Taurus, so the dosha is cancelled.

The fourth couple shows why it pays to read each koota by its own rules. The same pair of lords can cancel one dosha and leave the other in place.

Same Nadi marriage: what it means for you

If you share a Nadi, first check the cancellations above. Many same-Nadi couples find one applies. If none does, the 8 points stay at 0 and Nadi becomes an area that needs care.

That is still one koota out of eight, and guna milan is one part of a full kundli milan. House matching, Manglik balance and the planets of marriage all count. Questions people ask

Can Nadi dosha be cancelled?

Yes. With the same nakshatra it is cancelled when your padas differ, except for the pairs 1 and 4 or 2 and 3. With different nakshatras it is cancelled when your Moons share a sign or a sign lord.

Is same Nadi marriage allowed?

A shared Nadi is common, and it is often cancelled by a classical rule. When it is not cancelled it is an area that needs care, weighed alongside the rest of both charts.

Does friendship between Moon-sign lords cancel Nadi dosha?

Not in the rules we follow. Friendly lords cancel Bhakoot dosha but not Nadi dosha.

What is Pada Vedha in Nadi dosha?

It pairs pada 1 with pada 4 and pada 2 with pada 3 of the same nakshatra. A couple in one of these pairs keeps the Nadi dosha even though their padas differ.
