What the best kundli matching tool should do

Most people start kundli matching online by typing in two sets of birth details and getting a number out of 36. That number comes from guna milan, also called Ashtakoot (the eight-part match). It is the traditional core of Kundali Milan, and a good tool should score it carefully.

A guna total is still only the first page of the story. The classical method goes on to ask whether the low-scoring parts are cancelled, whether Mars needs balancing, whether the two charts mirror each other in the houses of marriage, and whether the planets of marriage are strong. A tool that stops at the total leaves all of that out.

Here are the checks to look for, in the order an astrologer would usually think about them.

Guna milan with the Bhakoot and Nadi exceptions

The eight kootas (areas of the match) carry 36 points between them. The two heaviest are Bhakoot (7 points, from the two Moon signs) and Nadi (8 points, from the two birth stars). When either scores 0, the tradition calls it a dosha, and it can pull a total down by 7 or 8 points in one go.

Classical texts also list exceptions that cancel these two. Bhakoot is cancelled when both Moon signs share a lord, or when the two lords are natural friends. Nadi has its own rules, based on the birth star, its quarter (pada) and the Moon signs. A good tool applies these exceptions and tells you when one has been used. Manglik checked from three points, in both charts

Manglik, or Mangal dosha, is Mars in certain houses of the chart. A careful check counts Mars from three reference points: the Lagna (rising sign), the Moon and Venus. It then applies the classical cancellations, such as Mars in Aquarius or Leo, or Venus or Jupiter in the Lagna.

For a match, Mars is never judged in one chart alone. A Manglik placement in one chart can be balanced by the partner’s chart. A tool that only says “Manglik: yes” without the cancellations or the balance between the two of you is giving you a label and little else. House matching and the planets of marriage

Guna milan uses only the two Moons. The rest of the chart matters too. Bhava Milan (house matching) compares the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses of both charts and asks whether malefic planets in those houses mirror each other. A difference in the 7th or 8th house, the houses most tied to marriage, weighs more than a difference elsewhere.

A thorough tool also looks at the karakas (significators) of marriage: Venus in his chart and Jupiter in hers. It checks whether they are strong, not too close to the Sun and not sharing a sign with Rahu or Ketu. It can also compare the planets that rule both rising signs and both Moon signs, which says a lot about everyday understanding.

Timing and accurate birth details

Compatibility is one question. When to marry is another. A complete reading looks at transits, especially Jupiter, to find months that favour marriage in both charts at once.

None of this works without accurate charts. The tool should calculate planets from a proper astronomical ephemeris, ask for the birth time, and convert it using the time zone of the birth place on that date, including any daylight saving. Warning signs in kundli matching online

Be careful with any tool that shows one or more of these:

• Only a guna total out of 36, with no breakdown of the eight kootas.
• A Bhakoot or Nadi score of 0 with no mention of whether an exception cancels it.
• Manglik checked from the Lagna alone, or with no cancellations and no look at the partner’s chart.
• No birth time asked, or no birth place, so the rising sign and houses cannot be known.
• A vague verdict such as “average match” with no reasons you can check.
• Frightening language, or a remedy sold before the chart has even been read properly.
