What is my purpose? Why the question comes up
Most people do not wake up on an ordinary Tuesday and ask why they are here. The question tends to arrive at a crossroads. You are choosing between a safe job and something you actually care about, or your family is talking about marriage and you are not sure what you want. Sometimes it comes after a loss, when the old plan no longer makes sense.
Plenty of NRIs know a version of it too. You moved abroad for work, the work went well, and somewhere along the way you started wondering what all of it was for.
Astrology will not hand you a job title or a one-line answer. What a birth chart can do is show the themes your life keeps returning to, and that is often a useful place to start thinking.
The purpose of life in Vedic thought: dharma and the four aims
Indian tradition has an old frame for this question. It names four aims of a human life, the purusharthas:
- Dharma: right action, your duty and the way of living that suits your nature.
- Artha: wealth, work and security.
- Kama: love, pleasure and enjoyment.
- Moksha: freedom, the release the tradition sees as the final goal.
Dharma is listed first. Money and love are meant to be pursued within it, so a person who earns well and loves well but works against their own nature still feels something missing. When someone asks about the purpose of their life, they are usually asking about their dharma.
The birth chart is one traditional way to read that nature. Jyotish has many layers for it, and our free tool reads three of them.
Three places your chart answers “what is my purpose”
Rahu and Ketu are the two nodes of the Moon. They always sit exactly opposite each other, and between them sits the Atmakaraka, the soul planet. Read together, these three give a simple map.
- Ketu marks what you mastered before this life. Skills here come easily, and the same area can turn into a comfort zone that holds you back. It is the part to loosen your grip on.
- The Atmakaraka is the planet of the soul in Jaimini astrology. It shows what your soul most wants and the lesson it came to learn. That lesson tends to show up again and again, in different clothes, until it is learned.
- Rahu marks the unfamiliar ground this life pulls you towards. It often feels awkward or even a little frightening at first, and it is where growth happens.
You need your date, time and place of birth to find all three. The free Atmakaraka calculator works them out together and also shows the house each one falls in, so it doubles as a Rahu Ketu calculator.
Atmakaraka meaning: the seven soul planets
To find the Atmakaraka, take the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn and see how far each has travelled through its sign. The planet with the highest degree within its sign is the Atmakaraka. A planet at 27 degrees of Libra outranks one at 12 degrees of Leo, because only the degree inside the sign counts.
| Atmakaraka | The lesson in a few words |
|---|---|
| Sun | Recognition and humility |
| Moon | Care and emotional security |
| Mars | Courage and conflict |
| Mercury | Intellect and honest speech |
| Jupiter | Wisdom and teaching |
| Venus | Love and attachment |
| Saturn | Patience and duty |
Some astrologers add Rahu to make an eight-karaka scheme. We follow the seven-planet scheme, which leaves out Rahu and Ketu, so on KundliScore Rahu is never the Atmakaraka. It still has its own place in your reading as the direction you are meant to grow in.
The same ranking also gives the Darakaraka, the planet with the lowest degree, which tradition reads as the planet of your spouse. The Darakaraka calculator explains what yours says.
How to read Ketu, the Atmakaraka and Rahu together
Think of it as three steps in order. Ketu is what to let go of, the Atmakaraka is the lesson, and Rahu is where the lesson takes you. Each one also falls in a house, counted from your Lagna (the rising sign), and the house shows where in life that step plays out.
Here is how one chart might read. Say Ketu sits in your 4th house, Saturn is your Atmakaraka, and Rahu is in your 10th. Ketu in the 4th points to past comfort in home, mother and private peace, and you may feel restless at home even in a nice house. Saturn sets the lesson of carrying duty without bitterness: results come slowly and family leans on you. Rahu in the 10th then asks you to step out into public life and take on responsibility at work that you once avoided.
Put together, that reading points the purpose of this life towards patient, visible work built over many years. Your own chart will say something different, which is why it helps to see it in full.
What your chart cannot tell you about your purpose
The Atmakaraka and the nodes describe themes and tendencies. They do not decide your career or fix your future. Two people with the same Atmakaraka can live very different lives, because the rest of the chart, and the choices each person makes, count for a great deal.
The same goes for past lives. People search “what was I in my past life” hoping for a name or a story. Ketu does not give that. Traditionally it shows what you mastered before: the skills and habits that come easily now. A reading that claims to name who you were goes beyond what Ketu shows.
Treat a reading as guidance for reflection. If you face a serious decision about health, money or the law, speak to a qualified professional as well.
What should I do in my life? Questions to ask alongside your chart
A chart works best next to honest reflection. Once you have your reading, sit with a few questions:
- What comes so easily to me that I barely value it? Is that comfort keeping me from trying anything new?
- Which problem keeps coming back in my life, at work, at home or in relationships, even when the people change?
- What would I try if I were less worried about looking foolish at the start?
- When have I felt most useful to someone else, and what was I doing?
- Which of the four aims gets most of my energy right now, and which one have I been ignoring?
Compare your answers with your Ketu, Atmakaraka and Rahu. Where they agree, you probably have something worth acting on. To begin, find your Atmakaraka free. It takes your birth details, keeps nothing, and shows all three points with the houses they fall in.
If your question is really about marriage, the same birth chart also shows the planets of partnership. A marriage prediction reads those and the periods when marriage is most supported.
Questions people ask
What is my purpose in life according to astrology?
Vedic astrology frames purpose as dharma and reads it in three chart points. Ketu shows what you mastered before, your Atmakaraka shows the lesson that repeats, and Rahu shows where you are meant to grow.
Which planet shows the purpose of life in a birth chart?
The Atmakaraka, or soul planet. It is the planet with the highest degree within its sign among the seven from the Sun to Saturn, and it shows the lesson your life keeps returning to.
Can a past life calculator tell me what I was in my past life?
No. Ketu shows what you mastered before, the skills and habits that come easily now, but it does not name who you were or tell a past life story.
What does a Rahu Ketu calculator show?
It finds the signs and houses of Rahu and Ketu in your chart. Our Atmakaraka calculator does this too, reading Ketu as what to let go of and Rahu as where you are meant to grow.
Does the Atmakaraka decide my career?
No. It describes a theme. Astrologers read career through the 10th house and the running dasha as well, and your own choices count for a great deal.
